Meshes of the Afternoon (excerpt)
Setting:
FLUTE, CLARINET, STRING QUARTET and PERCUSSION
Written as part of Tanglewood’s Silent Film Project, scoring our own interpretations of pre-existing films (live performance). The goal of this yearly project is for the Composer Fellows to divvy up sections of films so that we all get to score parts of them. A collaboration exercise for composers to work with each other’s styles and transition seamlessly between each section.
Story:
This film is Maya Deren’s Meshes of the Afternoon, to which I scored the middle section. Being a dancer/choreographer, I was personally struck by the nature of the choreography in this film, and much of the music is inspired by that.
